'Fun in the Park' Photo Contest Winners Announced

COBB COUNTY, GA -- The "Fun in the Park" Photo Contest, hosted by the Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, is over for 2010.

This year marked the largest turn-out in the contest's history. Over 280 photos, all of which were taken in Cobb parks, were submitted in the three categories.

With so many great photos submitted, the panel of eight judges had a difficult time selecting the winners.

Berry College Students Beautify Silver Comet Trail

ROME, GA -- A group of Berry College students recently participated in the nationwide "Make a Difference Day" and proved to be great examples to all volunteers.

On Saturday, Oct. 23, the students headed to Polk County and spent the morning cleaning up the Silver Comet Trail. Working together, they helped remove 72 tires from the Van Wert Trailhead.

Part of Berry's mission is to "challenge students to devote their learning to community and civic betterment," and the majority of students spend multiple hours per semester serving and investing in their community.

Paulding County Celebrates Halloween

DALLAS, GA -- The spooky Halloween fun begins a week early in Dallas, when the county board of commissioners will open to gates to the Trick or Treat Village.

This annual event for Paulding County children will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Earl Duncan Park at Paulding Meadows (724 Paulding Meadows Drive, Dallas, 30132).

Children up to age 12 may participate in the costume parade, which begins at the park's stage at 5:30 p.m. There will also be hay rides, games and trick-or-treating.

Admission is free; food and drink will be sold at the event.

Emergency Response Exercise Scheduled for Paulding County

DALLAS, GA -- Paulding County Emergency Services has an important message for the community.

On Wednesday, Sept. 22, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Paulding County Emergency Management, in conjunction with the Paulding County Board of Education, Paulding County Sheriff, Paulding County Fire, WellStar Paulding Hospital and several other local and state agencies, will be conducting a full-scale emergency exercise in the area near Poole Elementary School (1002 Wayside Lane, Dallas, 30132).

If you live in the area or are driving through during these hours, you may notice a large number of emergency responders participating in the exercise. It is important to pay attention to any traffic control devices or officials directing traffic in the area.

Streets surrounding Poole Elementary on Wayside Lane will be temporarily closed beginning at 8:45 a.m. until approximately 1:00 p.m.

The 2010 Dallas Farmers Market is in full swing!

The 2010 market season opened with many new vendors and more fresh, local produce! Come meet the folks who grow their own and where their produce has traveled less than 20 miles from farm to market. Our Market is not just a place to buy wonderful edibles, but, a place to connect with your community. The Market will be offering advice and soil sampling from the Master Gardeners; they will also sell you a portable composter to go with your new garden!

The Dallas Farmers Market is held on Saturdays in the historic Downtown Dallas Courthouse Square area. Hours are 8 AM - noon. The market will remain open into October. The Market's vendors sell a wide variety of produce including fresh berries, squahes, eggplant, beans, melons and fresh herbs.
