MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Chattahoochee Tech Golden Eagles' club cheerleading squad has flown away with a second place finish in its first competition.

The cheerleaders competed in the Level 6 division at the Spirit Unlimited competition on Saturday, Mar. 12 at the Georgia State University Sports Arena.

Over 35 squads from around the state competed across all six levels.

The CTC cheerleaders put on a two-and-a-half minute routine in front of 1,500 spectators in one of the day's last performances.

"It was really high energy pretty much the whole time," said Audra Tillman, head coach of the Golden Eagles. "Of course, for us, it was our first competition, so we were just really, really excited. So when we went out on the court, I don't think I really remember anything. I was just really excited to see everybody out there."

The cheer program, which features eight female and two male athletes on the competition squad, is in its third year of existence. Four or five additional athletes join the team to cheer during Golden Eagles' men's basketball and club football games.

For Tillman, the team's outstanding first performance brings CTC cheerleading into a new era.

"We've been working on it ever since the football season started in August," she said. "It was our goal last year to make a competition. So we've kept them preparing for it for the last four months."

The squad also cheers for the Cobb Saints, a community football team, which is coached by current CTC head football coach Tim Freeman.

The cheerleaders practice every Monday and Wednesday at the Cheer Imperial Allstars gym in Powder Springs. They plan to compete at the Season's Finale meet in Charleston, South Carolina on Saturday, Apr. 30.
