State parks still open despite shutdown

ATLANTA -- The government shutdown has closed a number of national parks and historic sites, but Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites will still be open this weekend.

The state parks located on the local Corps of Engineers lakes are open to visitors. They include Don Carter State Park on Lake Lanier in Gainesville; Red Top Mountain State Park on Allatoona Lake in Cartersville;and Tugaloo State Park on Lake Hartwell in Lavonia.

"We've already had a number of campers check into our state parks because they had to leave Corps of Engineers campgrounds which had closed," State Parks Assistant Director Wally Woods said in a statement. "We have plenty of cabins, yurts and campsites available this week."

DALLAS, Ga. -- The Paulding County Sheriff's Office is gearing up for its 12th annual memorial for the heroes who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

"We will never forget this horrible day," Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge said. "We will always remember the families of the heroes that died that day. We will never forget about the ones that lived through the horrifying experience and are left with terrifying memories."

This year's event will be held Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 8:40 a.m. at Mt. Tabor Park. Special guests include representatives from the New York Police and Fire departments.

Library to hold teen craft night

HIRAM, Ga. -- Paulding County teenagers are invited to attend a free craft night in Hiram later this month.

The arts and crafts session will be held Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Maude P. Ragsdale Public Library, which is located at 1815 Hiram-Douglasville Highway.

HIRAM, Ga. -- Come out to Olde Town Hiram on Friday, Nov. 30 for the 7th annual lighting of the Christmas tree.

The fun begins at 6 p.m. with live music from Contagious, the Nebo Elementary School Chorus and the New Unity Christian Fellowship Praise Group.

Santa Claus is scheduled to arrive at 6:15 p.m.; children are more than welcome to take pictures with him in his workshop.

Downtown businesses will be open during the festivities, giving attendees an opportunity to complete their holiday shopping while they celebrate.

'B at the Movies' this summer

ATLANTA -- Looking for some free family fun this summer?

ALDI and radio station B98.5 will present the "B at the Movies" outdoor movie series at several locations throughout metro Atlanta all summer long.

Everyone is invited to bring their blankets and chairs to the participating parks and watch the family-friendly movies on giant inflatable screens. Movies begin at dusk, but come out early for activities and giveaways.
