Paulding suspects in chase shoot at police, cause school lockdown

PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. -- Just before 8 a.m. Thursday, Villa Rica police responded to shots fired within the city limits.

When responding officers tried to pull over a pickup truck, the suspects sped off north on Highway 61.  During the chase they entered Paulding County and the suspects started shooting at officers out the window with a high-powered assault rifle.

The chase continued until they ended up on Winn Road when the suspects turned into into Brookwood Subdivision, directly across the street from South Paulding High and Dugan Elementary schools.

The suspects drove through yards, destroyed mailboxes, and drove through a privacy fence. The truck got stuck as the suspects tried to drive through a pine tree thicket.

Four suspects ran into the wooded area, and the schools locked down as a precaution.  No students were ever in danger and no one was hurt.

Police found two women and one man in the woods.  A short time later, the other man was located by a K-9 Unit in the woods between South Paulding High School and Dugan Elementary.

Both men were wearing bulletproof vests and police found a high-powered "SKS" type assault rifle and a semi-automatic pistol in the truck.

All four suspects were taken to the Carroll County jail where they will face felony and misdemeanor charges. They also face felony and misdemeanor charges in Paulding County.
