PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. -- Deputies shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at them on Friday, according to the Paulding County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities identified him Friday evening as 39-year-old William Tarrant of Dallas, Ga.

Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation report the shooting happened on Mt. Vernon Church Road around 3:15 p.m. Friday.

The incident started as a domestic disagreement at the home around 10:30 Friday morning. When sheriff's deputies arrived at the home, they determined that the Crimes Against Children Unit and the Division of Family and Children Services were needed in the investigation, according to Sgt. Ashley Henson of the Paulding County Sheriff's Office.

After further investigation, deputies determined that the child would be removed from the home. At that point, the child's father took out a handgun from the small of his back and pointed it at deputies, Henson said. Deputies responded by shooting and killing the man.

There were no other injuries.

DFCS was called to take the child away.

The GBI is responding to the scene to investigate, which is protocol in officer-involved shootings.
