One dead after 81-year-old driver jumps curb

DALLAS, Ga. (WXIA) -- A woman was killed Friday afternoon after being struck by a car driven by an elderly Marietta woman outside the Paulding County Courthouse.

The Paulding County Sheriff's Office says they received a 911 call at about 12:45 p.m.

Investigators said that Marlene Wilbur, 81, hit her gas instead of her brakes, which sent her car careening out of control and onto a walkway between the Courthouse and the Annex Building, breaking windows as she went, and smashing into the five pedestrians.

By late Friday night, there was little left of the carnage – just remnants of the clean-up and questions about what happened.

"I was concerned that she might have had some of her grandkids with her," Locklear said. "She's got seven kids, so… It's really hard to talk right now. I hadn't had a real good relationship with her in a while and it really hurts."

Larry Locklear is brother of Linda Jones, 71, who was killed in the mishap.

"I was at lunch, and there were a lot of people – not necessarily who were involved, but who were witnesses and saw it, so it was an extremely chaotic scene there for awhile," said Cpl. Ashley Henson of the Paulding County Sheriff's Office.

Now, Wilbur is facing charges of second degree vehicular homicide.

"We gathered all the information, we talked to witnesses, trying to figure out exactly what happened. We're going to gather everything, and continue our investigation to see exactly what happened," a GSP Sergeant James Davenport told 11Alive's Keith Whitney late Friday afternoon.

Jessica Araguin was one of the pedestrians who was hit. She was carrying her five-month old twins, one in her arms and the other in a child carrier. While she received serious injuries, her children were relatively unhurt.

The other adult sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Wilbur was booked, then released on bond. The GSP's investigation is continuing into exactly why Wilbur was not able to stop before hitting the victims.
