Tips for cold weather plant protection

Tips for cold weather plant protection

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- When the weather report calls for freezing temperatures overnight, you do not want to be rushing outside in the dark to cover cold-sensitive plants.

According to University of Georgia experts, protect plants in containers either by placing them inside a protective structure (house, garage, greenhouse or shed) or by placing a protective covering over them.

“People put a lot of time and expense in caring for their plants,” states Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “It is important for them to know how to protect their investments to nurture them for growth when the weather is cold.”

Container plants are especially susceptible to cold temperatures; their roots are more exposed because they are above ground. Plants with roots that are damaged by cold temperatures may not show immediate signs of damage; these plants will show signs of stress when temperatures rise and the demand for water from the roots are greater.

Summer in Georgia & peaches for weeks: What to do with those sweet GA peaches

Summer in Georgia & peaches for weeks: What to do with those sweet GA peaches

Atlanta, GA --  The blog Running With Tweezers has a great article including a variety of great recipes for this year's peaches.  If you have had one of this year's peaches you know they are just delicious!!!  Whether you want to make ice cream, a cake or a cobbler, @RunningWithTweezers.com has the perfect recipe for you.

Around here, we’re really fortunate to have summers full of local peaches. Growing up, they were one of my dad’s favorite foods and they made appearances at our house fairly regularly. Sliced on pound cake or angel food cake, on top of cottage cheese the old school way. In the colder months, he’d even eat canned peaches straight up with a spoon. While I’m not a proponent of the tinned variety, I’m a huge fan of the fresh ones grown here in the South.

Paulding Sheriff reminds families of summer window safety

Paulding Sheriff reminds families of summer window safety

DALLAS, Ga. -- Now that the weather is getting warmer, people are more inclined to leave their windows open during the day.

Unfortunately, this simple summertime gesture can often have devastating consequences.

The Paulding County Sheriff's Office has recently experienced a number of reports of toddlers falling out of windows. So far, there have been no fatalities, but some of the children experienced very serious injuries.

Many parents assume that window screens will prevent falls, but one case involved a toddler who pushed a screen out before falling.

Falls from windows result in an average of about eight deaths yearly to children ages five and younger, while an additional 3,300 children are treated in emergency rooms, according to the Consumer Product Safety Committee (CPSC). On average, about 34 percent of children need to be hospitalized after falling from a window.

DALLAS, GA -- The Dallas Farmers Market will return on Saturday, Mar. 5.

The market is located in downtown Dallas in the parking lot of Georgia Highlands College (25 Courthouse Square, 30132) and is open on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

Fresh local produce is available for purchase, straight from the farm to the consumer. There is something to please every palate: meat, eggs, fresh artisan bread, honey and jam, pesto, salsa, cheese, herbs, flavored popcorn, baked goods and, of course, fruits and vegetables.

The farmers are also on-hand on market days to talk about their wares and offer gardening advice. Many vendors do not use artificial fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides.
