AKA holding peace rally for middle school students

ATLANTA -- Members of metro Atlanta's chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will hold a peace rally and workshop for middle school students over the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend.

The event will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Ivy Community Center in southwest Atlanta. It is part of the 40 Days of Peace project, which aims to spread service and kindness through the country.

The peace rally and workshop will aim to teach young people about Dr. King's mission, and to raise awareness of crime and crime prevention strategies. Law enforcement members will also give an interactive presentation to encourage children to stamp out gangs and bullying.

Middle school students from several metro Atlanta counties -- Cobb, Cherokee, Clayton, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale -- are expected to participate.

'Country Royalty' coming to Dallas

DALLAS, Ga. -- A tribute show to two of country music's biggest legends will come to the Dallas Theater Civic Center later this month.

Jason Petty and Carolyn Martin will become Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, respectively, in Country Royalty.

The show will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19. Tickets range in price from $18 to $25 and can be purchased at seatadvisor.com.

Petty has been playing Hank Williams since starring in Hank Williams: Lost Highway at New York's Little Shubert Theater. He won an Obie Award for his portrayal.

Martin, a Nashville-based swing singer, has earned two Grammy nominations for her work with the Time Jumpers. She will perform some of Patsy Cline's biggest hits during the Jan. 19 show.

PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. -- Early voting for Paulding County's Jan. 8 special election begins this Thursday.

Voters can cast their ballots in advance Jan. 3-5 at the Paulding Election Office.

The Jan. 8 election will allow voters to choose the Georgia Senate District 30 representative. Republican Mike Dugan and Libertarian James Camp are vying for the senate seat.

The county will hold another special election Mar. 19 to decide on Sunday alcohol sales.

DALLAS, Ga. -- The Paulding County Chamber of Commerce will host its 52nd Annual Celebration on Thursday, Jan. 17, ringing in what is sure to be another great year for business in Paulding County.

The evening will begin with a VIP reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

Kennesaw State University professor and former radio personality Rhubarb Jones will deliver the keynote address at the event.

Breakfast meeting to address legislative agenda

DALLAS, Ga. -- The Cobb EMC 2012 Eggs and Issues Breakfast will be held in Paulding County later this month.

The event, which is sponsored by the Paulding County Chamber of Commerce, gives local delegates a chance to speak about the 2013 Georgia legislative agenda.

The buffet-style breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18. Admission is $10 for chamber members and $15 for non-members.

It will be held at Indigo Falls Events in Dallas.

Hiram Christmas tree to be lit Friday

HIRAM, Ga. -- Come out to Olde Town Hiram on Friday, Nov. 30 for the 7th annual lighting of the Christmas tree.

The fun begins at 6 p.m. with live music from Contagious, the Nebo Elementary School Chorus and the New Unity Christian Fellowship Praise Group.

Santa Claus is scheduled to arrive at 6:15 p.m.; children are more than welcome to take pictures with him in his workshop.

Downtown businesses will be open during the festivities, giving attendees an opportunity to complete their holiday shopping while they celebrate.

'GreasePaint' movie premiere open to all ages

DALLAS, Ga. -- GreasePaint world premiere will be held in Dallas on December 21st, 2012 at The Dallas Theatre and Civic Center (208 Main Street, Dallas GA 30132). The premier will be free and open to all ages, also attendees will be able to meet and greet with Joey Thurmond. The audience will be able to see the backstories of quite a few of the characters including the rise of a professional wrestler, to police officer, to clown.

GreasePaint is a documentary film by Daniel Espeut that follows Joey Thurmond and his family as they travel around the country performing the art of American circus clowning. The movie resurrects the dying art of clowning demonstrated by Joey’s love for the craft and makes sure that people see the human side of clowning.
