Bestselling author to visit McClure Middle School

DALLAS, Ga. -- He holds the Guinness World Record for the most bestselling fiction titles. He has sold 230 million copies of his books worldwide.

Now, he's coming to Paulding County.

James Patterson will visit McClure Middle School in Dallas this Friday to tell stories, answer questions and sign copies of his popular books.

The school won the visit from Patterson after earning first place in the Scholastic Book Fairs National Middle School Student Crew Contest, a competition that encourages students to organize and run their own innovative and exciting book fairs.

This was McClure's third win in the nationwide contest, making it the only school in North America to earn three author visits.

ATLANTA (AP) - Gov. Nathan Deal held a moment of silence for victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, which took place 10 years ago this Sunday.

Deal led a brief memorial ceremony at the state Capitol Friday, flanked by Georgia's Chief Justice Carol Hunstein and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle.

Deal also paid tribute to members of the military that have served in the wars that have taken place since the attacks on New York and Washington.

Deal did not speak to reporters. Spokesman Brian Robinson said the state is taking increased security precautions due to the anniversary, but he said there has been no mention of Georgia as a potential target.

Flags will be flown at half staff at all Georgia government buildings through sunset on Sunday.

ATLANTA – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

This weekend is the first week for Cirque du Soleil’s new show, Dralion, the show fuses together 3000-year-old Chinese acrobatic arts and the Cirque du Soleil approach. The show’s name is derived from dragons which symbolize the East and the lion which symbolizing the West. Dralion tickets are available at Ticketmaster and the show will be held at Philips Arena. Philips Arena is located at One Philips Drive in Atlanta.

Woodruff Park will play host to the German Bierfest Atlanta on Saturday. This is the eighth festival of its type and it will celebrate the greatness of German beer in a family environment. The festival will feature German food, activities, music and fun. The festival will be held from 2:00 p.m.

New film studio coming to Paulding County

HIRAM, Ga. -- Georgia is among the top five states in the nation for film and television productions. More than 335 productions were shot in the state in 2010, bringing in more than $759.3 million.

Now, Paulding County is ready to capitalize on its piece of this growing pie.

The Paulding County Industrial Building Authority (IBA) and Paulding County Board of Commissioners will break ground on a new full-service film and television production facility in Hiram at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Dubbed Atlanta Film Studios Paulding County, this venture will be the first production facility in decades to be developed outside of Atlanta city limits.

Line dancing teams to compete at Six Flags

Line dancing teams to compete at Six Flags

AUSTELL, Ga. -- If country line dancing is your thing, you won't want to miss the Texas Roadhouse line dancing contest at Six Flags.

The competition will be Tuesday, July 26 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Nine teams are scheduled to compete: four from Georgia (Douglasville, Hiram, Marietta and Snellville), three from Alabama and two from Mississippi.

Teams are made up of eight to 10 dancers dressed in Texas Roadhouse attire. They will each dance to three songs, and a panel of judges will evaluate them on creativity, energy, spirit and synchronicity.

The winning team will go on to represent the region in a national line dancing competition.

Tickets are $40 each, which includes a ticket to Six Flags, parking pass, food voucher and admission to the line dancing contest.

This weekend, the Atlanta inTown paper will be hosting the Atlanta Summer Arts Festival: Festival on Ponce which will be held at Ponce de Leon Avenue and Moreland Avenue in Olmstead Park, in the North Druid Hills neighborhood. The festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday and it will feature an artist market, food and entertainment. Local acts Jeno and Kitty Wolf will take the main stage during the two day festival. Comedian Chelsea Handler will be performing at the Chastain Park Amphitheatre on July 22 at 8 p.m. Handler is returning to Atlanta, now, to perform a show that was postponed earlier this summer.
