Chattahoochee Tech to host truck driving career expo

ACWORTH, Ga. -- Chattahoochee Technical College has planned a career expo for anyone interested in becoming a commercial truck driver.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 at the school's North Metro Campus. It will introduce interested parties to the school's 7.5-week truck driving program, which was designed to fill a growing need.

"We're facing a driver shortage that this country has never seen before," Ray Puckett, lead instructor of the driving program, said in a statement. "Baby boomers are retiring, so we're seeing companies increasing wages, providing better benefits and increasing the amount of time that drivers can spend at home."

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 3.2 million Americans worked as truck drivers in 2011, and that number is expected to grow 13 percent by 2018.

"Industry leaders are telling me they need drivers right now," Puckett said. "Our graduates are prepared to meet that challenge head-on. Truck drivers are definitely in the driver's seat now."

Chattahoochee's Tech's commercial truck driving program costs about $1,400 for Georgia residents, or $869.25 with the HOPE Scholarship. The next session begins May 14 and runs through July 5.

Admission requirements for the May 12 open house and career expo include a valid driver's license and no DUI violations in the last five years. Those who are interested must also successfully complete a drug test.
