HIRAM, Ga. -- The Paulding County Sheriff's Office issued a notice Thursday evening, saying that a man pretending to be a cop pulled over a driver on Hitchcock Road in Hiram earlier this week.

The victim told investigators she thought the suspect's dark-colored car was an "unmarked police car." It had flashing blue lights affixed to the front and back windows.

According to police, the suspect pulled in front of the victim's car and stopped, as if to block her in. He approached the woman and asked her to get out of her car.

Because the suspect was not wearing a badge or name tag, the victim refused to get out; instead, she asked the suspect to follow her to a public parking lot. That's when the victim told police the suspect said "never mind," got back in his car and drove away.

The victim described the suspect as a tall black man with a stocky build. He was wearing a long sleeve, dark-colored jumpsuit.

Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge says officers usually do not conduct traffic stops when they're driving unmarked cars. He also says the drivers who are being pulled over at night can keep driving until they reach a lighted parking lot, as long as they turn on their hazard lights to let the officer know they are not trying to get away.

"Dial 911 and ask the dispatcher if the vehicle behind you is in fact a police officer," Gulledge added.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call the Paulding County Sheriff's Office at 770-443-3010. Drivers who believe they are being pulled over by the suspect should call 911.
