Jogger attacked on Silver Comet Trail in Paulding County

PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. -- A Dallas woman was attacked while jogging on the Silver Comet Trail in Paulding County Tuesday evening.

Paulding County Sheriff's spokesperson Ashley Henson said the attack happened on the bridge over Academy Drive/Vernoy Aiken Road at around 6:45 p.m. The victim, 42-year-old Tina Waddell, told police she was heading east, toward Hiram, when a white man with dark hair grabbed her.

Waddell's injuries were severe enough to require her to be taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital by Life Flight. Henson said she was beaten about the head and face, and drifted in and out of consciousness during the attack. Waddell showed no outward signs of sexual assault, but Henson described her as "almost unrecognizable" due to the extent of her injuries.

After attacking Waddell, the suspect dragged her into a wooded area. Waddell managed to pull herself back onto the trail; she was discovered by bicyclist Peter Skott, who called 911.

At this point, police do not have any indication Waddell knew her attacker. She was unable to give a clear description of him.

Waddell's family has set up a fund to help pay her medical bills. Visit any SunTrust Bank location to donate to the "Take Back the Trail for Tina" fund.

The sheriff's office is asking members of the public who saw anyone or anything suspicious Tuesday evening on the Silver Comet Trail between the Dallas and Tara Drummond trail heads to call investigators at 770-443-3015.

Tuesday's attack happened almost eight years to the day after 53-year-old Jennifer Ewing was beaten to death while cycling on the popular trail. Michael Ledford was sentenced to death in 2009 for killing Ewing.
