Hiram High School Students Take Home Multiple Honors in 2011 ACE Mentor Program

Graduation season kicked off a little early for Trevor Owens and Tyler O’Hara, the two Hiram High School students who participated in the construction industry’s ACE Mentor Program, an  effort to encourage high school students to explore careers in the design and construction industry. At a graduation ceremony April 27 at the offices of Turner Construction Company in Buckhead, Trevor won the Best Junior Award, and Trevor and Tyler (along with Nora Wichmann of Galloway School) shared the Team Award.

Twenty students from 13 Atlanta-area schools participated in the Atlanta program. Founded by the principals of leading design and construction firms, the ACE (architecture, construction, and engineering) program engages, excites, and enlightens high school students to pursue careers in architecture, construction, and engineering.  Since its inception in 1994, the ACE Mentoring program has introduced more than 30,500 students to the industry through mentoring, scholarships, and grants.

The Atlanta ACE Program consisted of 13 sessions and featured:

·       A field trip to the new International Terminal at Hartsfield Jackson Airport

·       An architectural panel

·       College Day with Auburn, Georgia Tech and Southern Polytech

·       Structural and MEP Engineering sessions

·       BIM Session

·       Organization and Planning

·       Presentation Tips

·       Competitions in Tower Building, Bridge Building and Construction Management & Communication

The Atlanta program is one of several ACE programs Turner Construction supports across Georgia, including schools Rockdale and DeKalb Counties.  Another ACE program recently launched in Savannah.

Turner Construction, which is ranked as the #1 construction management firm in the nation by Engineering News Record, starts five ACE Mentor programs around the country each year, donating $10,000 to each local initiative.

“It’s vital that the industry mentors the next generation of our workforce,” says Theresa Schroeder, Community Affairs Director for Turner Construction.  “Over the years, we’ve seen many students go through the ACE program and grow into leadership roles in the construction industry.

Mentors and guest speakers participated from Turner Construction, Holder, Syksa Hennessy Group, Skanska, Georgia Tech, IBG Construction Services, New South Construction, Auburn University Alumni Club of Atlanta, Southern Polytechnic State University, Hargrove, McGraw-Hill, Georgia Power, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Jacobs, and Lithonia High School.
