ROME, Ga. -- A stage and screen fighting expert will host three master classes at Shorter University this week.

Richard Ryan is the assistant stunt coordinator for "Vikings," a History Channel drama series. He has worked on fight scenes and stunts for a number of major movies, including Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Golden Compass and The Dark Knight.

Ryan will offer stage combat classes to Shorter theatre and musical theatre majors on Jan. 17 and 18. Students from high schools in Bartow, Gordon, Murray and Paulding counties will also participate in the classes.

"Mr. Ryan is at the top of his field, and our students will learn much from his experience and his knowledge of film and the stage business," Shorter assistant theatre professor Kevin Anderton said. "It is a unique experience for our students to work with a theatre professional of his caliber."

The master classes will cover unarmed, rapier, dagger and broadsword stage fighting.
