Paulding County Students 'Step Into Poverty'

DALLAS, GA -- The Census Bureau reported Thursday that one in seven Americans was living in poverty in America last year.

The other six out of seven may have a hard time understanding what that means.

Some students at North and East Paulding high schools decided to see for themselves.

So they spent the last week eating, sleeping and going to school as though they were poor.

At North Paulding County High School, the cafeteria was serving pizza on Friday, but not everybody could afford it.

One group of students could only afford peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

"We sleep outside. We don't take showers. We wear the same clothes," explained "Step Into Poverty" organizer and high school senior Drew Morelli. "We cook on open fires, and we live on $2 a day."

Three years ago Drew Mirolli wanted to do something about poverty.

He was asked how far he was willing to go.

State Climatologist Says Drought Conditions Spreading in Georgia

ATLANTA -- Mild and moderate drought conditions have expanded over the past month to blanket western and southern parts of Georgia.

State climatologist David Stooksbury says above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall has caused soils to dry across the state.

Daytime highs through September have remained in the 90s across the piedmont and coastal plain.

He says rainfall for the past month has been as low as 50 percent of normal for large portions of the state. Counties south and west of Haralson, Paulding, Douglas and Troup are among those suffering moderate drought conditions.

He says much of the rest of the state is classified as abnormally dry.
